New GMFT website

I've been doing some work lately with creating 'next generation' web-
sites....to put it simply, they are dynamic (ever-changing) sites
that are easy for owners to update and change - even if they have no
web-site creation experience. They keep sites clean and professional
looking and are lively and are almost like an application than a
website. I've used this for my Events site (http://
events.dowsett.ca) for a couple years now and have recently started
doing sites like this for hire.
Russ approached me to revamp the GMFT site to use this type of
website for our site - http://gmft.org and it's now up and running.
I used Justin's content and pictures from the old and I thank him for
all of that. Harry Siempelkamp and Brent Levangie are now the
directors and will benefit by the site's main advantage (membership
management). Russ is staying on as "web lead" to help with the
transition.
So the member list is online as a listing (rather than a PDF as
before) - http://gmft.org/members. If you aren't logged on (and only
members can) you won't see the list (for privacy) and if you are
logged in, you can see all contact info. You are only listed on this
list if you are in good standing....ie either a Team Member or Guest
Member AND your insurance is current AND paid your annual fees.
Grouse's Guest Services will be using this dynamic list to issue
passes (team and guest) so if you aren't on the list, no pass!
The benefits of this dynamic list is that it is feasible (but don't
expect it) for a director to update your profile to get you on the on-
line list and moments later, Guest Services will see you on their
list and will be able to issue you your pass...no more paper lists.
The site also has:
- a great image gallery with neat transitions. We need photos so
upload what you have (you have to be logged in to be able to do that)
and I'd like to replace the banner images on the site with better ones.
- current weather snapshot - winds, temp, pressure and visibility
(sorry, no lapse rate)
- blogs
- event listing - which will also allow the organizers of the fly-in
to post volunteer time-slots for people to sign up for to help
- forum - I'd still use the yahoogroup to hook up with other to go
flying on any certain day
- membership documents for team and guest members
In the works...
- some sort of online flight logging...I'd like to make it mandatory
for pilots to log their flights as it'd be a good record of flights.
- Team Member signup slots - this was talked about in the past as a
requirement to stay on the team...the idea is Team members commit to
being at Grouse at a scheduled time to take guests. Even once or
twice a year would help get more guests out and get them enough
flights to get on the Team quickly.
So PLEASE use the site. What all members (team or guests) NEED to do
is signup for an account (at: http://gmft.org/user/register) and
fill in all the info. Don't leave this til the day you want to go
flying as the directors have to review your account, confirm HPAC
insurance is current and approve your account. There will not be a
paper list anymore so if you don't do this, you won't be able to fly
there. It sounds harsh, but it is much easier on the directors if
this is done (which is the main purpose of this new site).
Please use, and enjoy!
